Nuvoton Technology, in collaboration with ITRI, has launched the M55M1 entry-level AI MCU featuring an Arm Cortex-M55 core and dedicated NPU. Paired with the NuML Toolkit, it delivers a complete edge AI pipeline from model training to on-chip deployment.

As IoT device counts surge, more applications demand on-device intelligence—anomaly detection on factory equipment, voice wake-word recognition in smart homes, or gesture recognition in wearables. Latency, bandwidth costs, and privacy risks of cloud inference are driving AI compute to the endpoint. The market urgently needs an entry-level AI MCU balancing performance, power, and cost.

Product Highlights

The M55M1, jointly developed by Nuvoton and ITRI, is built on Arm Cortex-M55 with Helium SIMD acceleration—delivering up to 5x ML performance and 15x DSP throughput vs. Cortex-M4, enabling real-time inference without external accelerators.

The M55M1 integrates a dedicated NPU at 0.5 TOPS, with 1MB SRAM, 4MB Flash, up to 220MHz clock, and ~10mA active current at 3.3V. Built-in Arm TrustZone and Secure Boot provide PSA Certified hardware security.

NuML Toolkit: Lowering the Development Barrier

Nuvoton's NuML Toolkit supports TensorFlow Lite, ONNX, and PyTorch model import with automatic INT8/INT4 quantization and hardware optimization. Pre-deployment latency and memory estimates shorten debug cycles. Built-in reference models for keyword spotting, image classification, and anomaly detection enable one-click TFLite Micro firmware generation for M55M1.
